| Cremona |
 |
Founded by the Romans in 218 B.C. as a military base in the |
 |
| Po' Valley. Today, Cremona is head of province. It is a quiet city, dedicated mostly to agriculture and alimentary industry and of course, the making of violins.
Right in the heart of the valley, |
 |
Cremona takes advantage of the Pò River running nearby, protected by the imponent tower, "Il Torrazzo".
Unfortunately, the weather is quite humid, so the extreme temperatures are difficult to bear.. Of great interest is the historical centre with the highest churchtower in Italy. From the top, one can see all of the
Po' Valley as far as the Alps. The Cathedral is a lombard-gothic church of the 12th Century. Next to it, the octogonal Baptistry, built in
1167. City Hall and the Guards Palace (13th century) add |
to the charm of this beautiful piazza.
In the City Hall, the precious collection of antique instruments made by the great masters Stradivari, Guarneri
and Amati. Cremona has nice museums: The Painting Museum, the Stradivari Museum. The churches: San Michele, a romanic church of the
12th century; San Agostino (14th century) with a painting by Perugino (1495); S.ta Agata, decorated with frescoes by Giuliano Campi.
San Sigismondo is also decorated by Campi and other painters of the 16th century. |
