| Maintainance |
|
Maintaining an instrument in good order is not difficult, only some
basic attention is needed. Except for violent accidents, risks for our violin are not so numerous
but serious. If, for example, you leave your instrument inside the car exposed to the sun, you
can get into big trouble! The heat could melt the varnish and the dry air could create problems
with both the glueing and/or fracture the harmonic box. For the same reason, we have to be
careful with our home heating systems, usually too dry. A ingenious dampening system can be put
inside the violin case to keep the humidity constant. |

If the instrument is not played anymore, don't leave it in a dark
dusty corner of your attic, it could be a perfect meal for worms. In case the instrument is not
played, put some anti worm product such as naphtaline. Regarding changing strings, change one
string at a time, so the soundpost does not drop and the bridge remains in the right position.
Regarding the bridge, it should always be perpendicular to the top, never
leaning forward.
It is important to eliminate colophon from the surface of the violin to
avoid unaesthetical deposits.
If your hands sweat a lot, it is good practice to dry your instrument
thoroughly: the instrument will surely not be allergic to a soft cloth! |
