| Selecting the instrument |
First of all, you need to like the instrument for its aesthetics.
Then, you need to feel comfortable when playing it, the neck must feel comfortable to the
morphology of your hands.
Many factors depend on the bridge: its curve allows for easier
playing on one or more strings. The distance between the strings is also important to
play chords or double chords. If the strings are too high, the inclination of the fingerboard
could be responsible, or the height of the bridge. In any case, modifications can be made. |
| This is more difficult with the "acoustic box"! I am referring to
the thicknesses of top and back. If they are too thick, the instrument will never play
well. In that case, an intervention can be possible by opening the instrument and
correcting the thicknesses. On the contrary, if the thickness is too thin, the instrument
will play but not for long: there is a risk that the instrument looses its potential
after some months. To check this problem, you need to take a look at the edges near the
"f" holes, and check the body by exercising a light finger pressure, without exageration.
A light pressure is enough. The arching should give in slightly. If the instrument is
recently made, the varnish must not stick to the hand. About sound, everyone has his
own taste, but for the person who has no precise idea, I can only say that the instrument
should have a nice open sound with an easy projection and a fast reaction. The four strings
should have a good balance and a clear sound. For non experts, I would add that the
instrument's voice will better with time right from the start. |
